How to install wooden slopes: instructions for 2 methods of fastening

The slope is the part of the window opening that frames the window around the perimeter. After installing the window, this part needs to be processed to give the entire structure a finished look.

Those who are faced with renovating or building a house for the first time do not always understand why slopes on windows are needed. And really, why? After all, the frame is already in the opening, the doors open and close, so why spend extra money on framing? But after a while, even the most inveterate skeptics will admit that this window trim detail performs very important aesthetic and practical functions.

Note that it is advisable to install slopes immediately when installing windows. But if this is not possible, you can do it after some time.

What tasks do wooden slopes perform?

Windows with wooden slopes and window sills give the room a noble appearance and comfort. To complete the look, you need to give the beautiful windows a decent frame by installing slopes. It is recommended to install this structural element on windows made of a variety of materials, but when installing wooden frames, you simply cannot do without them.

Wooden slopes on windows are a good stylistic solution. Of course, the new window looks good anyway. However, like a mirror, it will look even better in a beautiful frame, since beautiful slopes reliably hide flaws that arise during installation. An interesting technique that gives windows a touch of aristocracy is slopes covered with light carvings or having individual carved elements. In particularly sophisticated interiors, there are even panels inlaid with wood of different species.

Wooden slopes on windows significantly improve the heat and sound insulation characteristics of the window and reduce the degree of heat transfer.

If you decide to refresh your interior, the easiest way to do this is by updating the window frame. Frames, window sills and slopes made of wood can be painted in the desired color, varnished or supplemented with decorative elements. Thus, with little material and labor costs, you will literally breathe new life into the boring furnishings of the room.

Insulation

An important part of the repair work associated with the installation of slopes is the insulation of the window frame. Of course, you can do without this, but in winter it will be much colder in an uninsulated room. The following are considered as insulation:

  • Styrofoam;
  • penoplex;
  • mineral wool.

Styrofoam

Budget insulation, which is in great demand among consumers. It is easy to work with, it costs a penny, and in terms of thermal insulation it is not much different from other competitors.

Penoplex

An expensive analogue of polystyrene foam, which differs from its “younger brother” in energy-saving properties. Among other advantages of the material, the following are noted:

  • more dense structure;
  • less tendency to absorb moisture.

Mineral wool

It is used in the case of insulation of frame structures, as it is extremely convenient to install. When purchasing material for insulation, pay attention to moisture resistance. Brands that tend to absorb excess liquid are not suitable for insulation.

Choosing wood for window slopes

Choosing a material for making window frames is a responsible matter. Many experts recommend making wooden window slopes from the same type of wood from which the main frames are made. And it’s not just a matter of possible aesthetic inconsistency, especially since the combination of several types of wood in one product may well become an interesting design solution. The point is that a window is a rather complex structure, which is located in a border zone with a significant difference in temperature and humidity. And to minimize loads, it is desirable that the materials used in the structure have the same expansion and compression coefficients depending on changing weather conditions. In this case, when changing heat to cold, drought to a period of precipitation, the risk of cracks and warping is lower.

The ideal material for making slopes, and indeed the entire window as a whole, is larch. This is a type of wood with unique properties, which is almost as hard as oak, and only gains strength over time; moreover, it has a magnificent golden-red hue, which over the years acquires a noble grayish tint. In addition, being a conifer, larch is rich in resin containing gum, which prevents infestation by bugs and microorganisms. This hard, durable tree practically does not rot (it’s not for nothing that Venice stands on larch stilts). Interestingly, larch is one of the few wood species that is highly stable and can be used even in its raw form. At the same time, a material with such unique properties costs much less than oak with similar characteristics.

A window with wooden slopes and an oak window sill is an excellent, but very expensive solution. However, it is worth noting that the service life of such products is more than half a century. With this in mind, installing oak windows can be seen as a long-term investment that will pay off over time. When choosing this material for framing windows, you should remember that oak wood is very dense and heavy, therefore, it is necessary to select the same durable fittings for it.

If you decide to use different types of wood to frame a window, then for external slopes for windows in a wooden house we recommend choosing hard, elastic, waterproof and durable varieties. In this case, larch is the best choice. And for interior design, you can choose a different wood that meets the design intent, although the best option is to make all the elements of the window structure from the same type of wood.

Wooden slopes for plastic windows can be designed in the same style. In this case, plastic often imitates one or another type of wood.

We were looking for access to a wholesale manufacturer of furniture panels. We needed boards of a fairly large size, and the criteria were: quality, scale and regularity of deliveries. Fortunately, we found all this at the TsPI company. We have been cooperating with them mutually for almost a year now. I like the quality of production in furniture panels from TsPI. They have an unsurpassed level of processing of each lamella and the shield as a whole.

Suslov GarikIzhevsk / 09/05/2015

Hello, I would like to express my gratitude to the TsPI company. We purchased a batch of linden furniture panels for our store. They broke up instantly! This is all thanks to the design of the panels - specialists select each lamella based on the design - and the excellent processing of the furniture panel. Ideal edges and surfaces of furniture make it very beautiful and attractive. People like it, and that's the most important thing.

In the linden furniture board we found exactly what we had been looking for for a very, very long time. This is the pliability of the material for cutting wood. There is nothing better than linden in this matter. Finding a manufacturer of a linden shield now is something unrealistic. Although the Internet is full of companies who supposedly sell them, in reality it turns out that “they are not and will not be in stock,” but the Center has everything. And they make them according to our sizes and standards. Just as the doctor ordered.

Advantages of wooden slopes for windows

Slopes can be made of a variety of materials: plastic, aluminum profile, plaster, drywall and, of course, wood. Most often, a wooden slope is chosen for finishing wooden windows. We do not recommend ordering expensive wooden frames, especially those made of oak or larch, and finishing them with artificial materials. If wood was chosen for the entire structure, then the finishing should be made from it.

Compared to other materials, wooden slopes have a number of advantages.

  1. Environmental friendliness. Wooden window openings provide the most favorable indoor microclimate, constant air exchange and optimal humidity.
  2. Noble appearance. Natural materials give the interior aristocracy and comfort. Wood is in tune with most style decisions. Even the most modern interiors, in which glass and metal predominate, only benefit if the accent elements, in our case windows, are made of wood. We also note that, unlike metal or plastic, wood can be easily adapted to changes in the interior by simply repainting the frame or varnishing it.
  3. Good functionality. In terms of protection from noise and cold, wooden products are not inferior to those made of metal or plastic.
  4. Variability of forms. Wood is a malleable and plastic material. Products made from it can be of the most bizarre shapes and non-standard sizes. This is especially true for houses built according to original designs. The elasticity of the material allows you to give the product the required shape, which will remain unchanged for several decades.
  5. Durability and wear resistance. Wood, unlike artificial materials, only gains density and strength over time, especially for oak and larch. It is known that the viscosity of larch resin increases so much that over time it is not only impossible to drive a nail into a board, but also to pull out old metal fasteners from it.
  6. Maintainability. If any part of a wooden window, in this case the slope, fails, it can be repaired without the need to replace the entire structure.
  7. Safety. Properly processed wood products have excellent performance characteristics - moisture resistance, fire resistance, resistance to damage by wood beetles, fungi and microorganisms.

Preliminary work

Before you begin installing slopes, you should carry out a number of preparatory steps:

  • First of all, you should make sure that the window frame is reliable. If it wobbles or has deviations in any direction, the defect should be corrected immediately;
  • using a tape measure, check the length and width of the window opening;
  • We check the window frame for mechanical damage or manufacturing defects.

If slopes are installed instead of old interior parts, do not forget to first dismantle them, clearing the place of excess construction foam and debris.

Disadvantages of wooden slopes

Although window frames made of natural wood have become widespread, we should not forget that such products are still one-piece things, and by definition they cannot be cheap. In addition, the price of the slope is determined by the type of wood. The point here is not even in the performance characteristics of this or that variety. Rather, we are talking about the availability of material. For example, pine is a popular building material because it is easy to reproduce, which is not the case with oak. So, the main disadvantage of the widespread use of wooden slopes is their high cost.

How wooden slopes are made

Wooden windows and window opening framing elements most often mean products made from laminated veneer lumber and laminated veneer lumber (furniture) panels. The first and main advantage of glued material over solid wood is the absence of deformation and warping during operation. This unique quality is achieved thanks to complex material manufacturing technology.

Each type of wood requires its own conditions and processing algorithms. In this case, the process begins with drying the wood, after which the wood is aged for some time to restore the moisture balance. The prepared wood is sawn into lamella blanks, which are then planed and sanded, as a result of which natural and manufacturing defects, chips, knots, resin pockets, etc. appear on them. The sorted lamellas are assembled into panels using the tongue-and-groove method and glued together. The assembled shield is polished again and sent under the press. Parts of the required size are cut out from the prepared shield. If necessary, work out the mounting reliefs and grind out the grooves. Then the products are treated with special impregnations - antiseptic, fireproof, water-repellent and others. And finally, comes the finishing touch - painting or varnishing. After this, the slope can be considered ready for installation.

Brushing furniture board

To give the lumber an unusual look, you can use brushing technology, which allows you to artificially age the wooden surface. This procedure can be carried out at home using a special torch and a stiff brush for processing metal products. It consists of the following actions:

1. The surface is treated under a small burner flame. During this process, the small fibers of the wood are burned. This makes it possible to obtain an expressive texture.

2. The next step is to brush out the unusable wood fibers.

You can also use a drill or grinder with a metal brush to artificially age the furniture board, which is later changed to an abrasive one. The last stage of brushing is treating the surfaces of the lumber with stain.

Installation of wooden slopes on wooden windows

Installation of slopes on wooden windows begins with accurate measurements. This stage is extremely important, since the window frame and slopes must be joined together with high precision. Otherwise, cracks may form that will spoil the favorable impression of the window, not to mention the disruption of functionality.

Let us remind you that the installation of wooden slopes on windows is the final stage of designing a window opening, which means that all identified shortcomings, curvatures and deformations of the opening must be eliminated.

It is necessary to carefully prepare and level the surface. In this way, the tightest possible fit is achieved, and the design looks like a single whole and fully meets the requirements for its functionality.

Installation of slopes on wooden windows is done in two ways:

  1. Installation of window slopes in a wooden house using polyurethane foam. This option is suitable if the customer does not want to see traces of attaching the slopes to the opening. All parts of the slopes are adjusted “dry” and after final assembly, the gap between the panels and the opening is filled with polyurethane foam. Until the polyurethane foam is completely polymerized, the structure must be supported with special spacers. At first glance, the technology is simple, but it requires a lot of experience.
  2. Installation of slopes using a fastening system on a frame made of bars. This method is used to design openings with significant irregularities and curvature. The panels are adjusted to the size of the window, after which the space between the frame slats is filled with insulation to the size of the slats. The structure, assembled using self-tapping screws, is mounted into the grooves with snap-fastenings, self-tapping screws with plugs, and liquid nails.

In a budget option, slopes are attached to wooden walls using nails without heads. This method is often used when installing pine or coniferous slopes for painting in not very critical rooms - sheds and utility rooms.

When installing slopes in a wooden house, it is necessary to leave gaps for climatic deformations, which can be closed with special planks.

Getting ready for finishing

Before you begin installing window slopes, you need to check that the window blocks are installed correctly. If there are deviations horizontally or vertically, or if there is a curvature of the profile, the errors must be reduced as much as possible so that the subsequent finishing of the windows does not highlight the shortcomings. To do this, you can use plumb lines, placing them in the next order above the vertical profile of the window frame. Then you need to measure the sides with a tape measure and, if the indicators match each other, you can move on.

Check that there are no scratches or chips on the profiles. The window block must have a smooth surface that is free of bubbles and cracks. The slopes are installed after complete dismantling of the previous parts. Necessary:

  • remove old slopes;
  • remove excess foam;
  • remove the protective film;
  • seal through holes.

Installation of wooden slopes on plastic windows

Often, owners of country houses choose plastic windows as a budget solution for glazing a wooden house. This option has a right to exist, since in this case a unique microclimate is also created due to micro-slit ventilation, but not through windows, but through walls. No matter how carefully the house is insulated, wood remains a breathable material and provides optimal humidity indoors.

For aesthetic reasons, plastic windows can be decorated with wooden slopes. Note that the opposite solution, that is, treating the opening of a wooden window with plastic slopes, is an extravagant and unattractive idea.

In order for the wooden frame to harmonize with the white plastic frames, it can also be made in light colors, especially if this color prevails in the interior of the room. If the walls are painted in dark tones, then it is better to choose window frames in dark shades or natural wood colors.

Installation of wooden slopes on plastic windows is also done using the two methods described above.

  1. When using polyurethane foam, it is necessary to carefully treat the surfaces and level the corners so that they match perfectly. After this, a thin layer of foam or adhesive sealant is applied to the window frame. It should be taken into account that polyurethane foam is prone to significant swelling. Then the panels are installed, and the joints can be additionally treated with silicone sealant (transparent or wood-colored). This method is acceptable for installing slopes of plastic windows in a wooden house.
  2. Installing wooden slopes on plastic windows on a frame made of bars is most often used if the walls adjacent to the window have significant unevenness and curvature. Work begins with attaching the guides, which must be done while strictly observing symmetry. Then the panels are inserted into the installed guides, and the space between them and the wall is filled with insulation. At the final stage, the corner joints are installed, if necessary, additionally treating the structure with a suitable sealant, and the remaining foam is removed. For a better fit of the slopes to the frame parts, it is recommended to sand the joints with fine sandpaper.
