Application areas of heat-resistant silicone gaskets

If you use gas cylinders at home, then you probably know that safety should come first. Agree, nothing adds confidence more than peace of mind for yourself, your loved ones and property. In this sense, everything is decided by the gasket on the gas cylinder - a very cheap and simple remedy. The safety of using the equipment directly depends on its quality and size. It would be nice to protect yourself from explosion, destruction or possible fire, wouldn't it?

We will tell you about the requirements for gaskets and the rules for their use. You will find out what sizes, types they come in, and what features they have depending on the materials used. Together with this information, it will be easier for you to make a choice whether to buy a new or replace the old seal.

Gaskets are used on many connections. In the gas industry, seals are used on cylinders, hoses, and pipelines. This is done for the sake of safety and to minimize fuel losses. Read the article and find out more about it.

Requirements for sealing products

The gasket must correspond to the drawing. Shape displacement is allowed within the limits indicated in special tables.

Reducer on a gas cylinder: the gasket at the junction of the converter and the valve has to be changed more often - usually disposable seals are used, but some models of reducers do not need a gasket at this connection at all

Do not place washers with cracks, bubbles or porosity on the working surfaces (P). In the case of non-working ones (NR), only gaskets with cracks are not used, but exceptions are made for other parameters.

On surfaces of both types, gaskets with some defects can be installed if they do not exceed the permissible values:

  1. Imprint on the surface of the product. With depth, length and width allowed for the gasket size.
  2. A chip up to 0.3-1.5 mm long, depending on the thickness of the seal.
  3. Pressing out up to 0.3-1.5 mm high. The value also depends on the thickness of the washer.
  4. Depressions, elevations and inclusions. Up to 0.3-5 mm.
  5. Under-formation. Up to 0.3-5 mm, based on the thickness of the gasket.
  6. Retracted edge. With a size of up to 0.3-1 mm.

Before installation, the gaskets are cleaned of dirt and dust and the target surface is prepared in the same way. The rings are fastened without shock loads, with short stretching.

The condition of the sealing gasket can be determined by the unit in which it is installed. After changing the unit or removing the product itself, it is subject to further use if the appearance remains unchanged and the dimensions are maintained.

The criteria also apply to seals and transport rings for propane gas cylinders of 2, 5, 10, 12, 15, 20, 27, 40, 50 liters and more. Products for methane cylinders of 47, 50, 67, 80, 85, 96, 100, 123, 132, 160 and 185 liters fall under the standards.

Connection Security Basics

Any gas equipment, including related ones, must be connected in compliance with safety rules. Gas is an explosive substance, when working with which you should be extremely careful.

This requirement also applies to devices for its connection, which must be of high quality and provide the appropriate level of protection:

  1. It is not recommended to hide the gas hose; it is important to ensure access to it.
  2. The product cannot be painted.
  3. When installing, you should pay attention to the tension of the sleeve - it should sag a little.
  4. During the installation process, do not bend or twist the eyeliner too much.
  5. Metal parts of the product must be protected from condensation.

To install a flexible hose, only tools, materials and components designed for working with gas equipment are used. This is worth paying special attention to, because many parts are almost identical to materials for plumbing.

How to choose a seal for a hob?

Has the hob seal in your home become unusable? There is no need to get upset and rush to the hardware store to buy a new device. After all, today you can easily purchase any spare part for this or that equipment. offers a wide range of components for stoves of various models and manufacturers. Our catalog contains only high-quality and reliable spare parts for household appliances.

A reliable sealing tape for a hob can last a long time if used correctly. However, it must be made of suitable material, dense and durable. When choosing a gasket, you need to consider the following factors:

  • Material of manufacture. The product must be made of reliable and wear-resistant raw materials. It must withstand high temperatures well and retain its basic properties for a long time.
  • Manufacturer. Each company has its own quality standards and uses certain materials. We recommend giving preference only to well-known and trusted manufacturers with certified products.
  • Value for money. The better quality seal you choose for your hob, the more expensive it will cost. But at the same time, the gasket will last you much longer than a cheaper option.

The efficiency and performance of the hob directly depends on the quality of the seal. If it malfunctions, using the stove is not always possible or safe. This element may become unusable at any time. In this case, it is necessary to urgently replace it with a new one.

Materials for seal

Paronite, rubber and fluoroplastic are used in production.

Due to its adhesiveness, paronite tightly fills cracks and gaps. The connections are specially protected with graphite so that the material does not stick to them. Biological and climatic factors have little effect on paronite, and a sealant with mineral additives will survive contact with aggressive hydrocarbons. As the ideal size of the washer is exceeded, its effect becomes minimal.

Rubber is used because of its elasticity and ability to restore shape. Other properties include amorphousness and elasticity. The latter indicator increases with the ambient temperature. Hardness is controlled by the degree of vulcanization, plasticizers and fillers.

Seals are made of nitrile butadiene rubber with an upper temperature limit of +120...+130 °C and fluorine rubber, which can withstand up to +150...+200 °C.

Paronite gaskets are used not only on gas cylinders, but also on stoves, meters, columns, hoses and connections

Fluoroplastic exhibits resistance to chemical and corrosive processes. The material was also found to have weather resistance, heat and frost resistance. Due to low gas permeability, fluoroplastic began to be used in private homes and household gas distribution systems. After ignition, it quickly dies out, and the friction coefficient is in the range of 0.4–0.05 at a load of 1–20 kgf/cm².

In practice, silicone profiles are also used, but general safety standards prohibit installing the material on gas and fire equipment. Silicone seals reliably, exhibits high temperature resistance, but is highly flammable.

Gasket replacement procedure

Changing the O-ring on the body neck often coincides with replacing the valve. The gasket is updated if a problem with it or the faucet is identified.

Before connecting a gas cylinder to any gas-using appliance, worn parts on the container should be replaced: their appearance will be the best guide

They resort to replacing the valve if:

  • it is not possible to move the flywheel, it has become more difficult to turn it;
  • there is deformation of the valve or its parts;
  • there is a smell of gas in the room;
  • The scheduled technical inspection did not take place.

Gaskets are changed with a precise algorithm of actions. First, the cylinder itself is taken as far as possible from buildings. The valve flywheel is slowly unscrewed, after which the gas is released. The valve is carefully removed, smoothly and without damaging the housing.

The condensate remaining in the cylinder is poured out. Then simple technical steps remain: install a new gasket, another valve (if necessary). Finally, check for leaks.

Independent manipulations are prohibited by the rules, but in extreme cases and if you have the skills, you don’t have to wait for specialists. Some types of valves can be partially disassembled indoors and without releasing gas, for example, to replace internal seals.

Replacement of cylinder parts may be necessary at least once every two years, and, in addition, there are restrictions in terms of independent actions and storage conditions for the container

Replacing the gasket between the valve and the gearbox will take less time. It will be enough to close the flywheel, disconnect the gearbox and install a seal between its nut and the valve fitting.

Some gearboxes do not operate through a valve, but directly from the cylinder. In this case, it should be taken outside to release the gas.

Types and design of valves

The threads of valves for gas cylinders are standardized, but they themselves can have a variety of designs. The choice of valve model is influenced by the type of chemical substance being stored, production features of operation and the amount of money. Before purchasing new equipment, you should familiarize yourself with the design options and internal structure of the valves.

The design features of gas cylinder valves are determined not by the whims of engineers, but by safety considerations.

Gas valve model VB-2. This valve model has proven itself positively back in Soviet times. It has been used in everyday life and industry for decades, causing a minimum of problems.

The choice of metal for the manufacture of the valve body is determined by the type of gases contained in the cylinder. There are the following types of shut-off valves, depending on the type of chemicals stored:

  1. Acetylene. The body of such cylinders is painted white. Special valves are used in cylinders containing acetylene, chlorine, ammonia and other aggressive substances.
  2. Oxygen. The cylinders are painted blue and are intended for storing oxygen, argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and other inert gases.
  3. Propane-butane. They are painted red and are intended for storing substances corresponding to the name and other gaseous hydrocarbons. The most common valve type model for such a cylinder is VB-2.

Valves for acetylene cylinders are not made of brass because the substances they contain may react chemically with copper. Typically, carbon or alloy steel is used to manufacture shut-off valves of this type.

The lower fitting of the valve is used to connect to the gas cylinder, the upper one is used to attach the flywheel, and the side one is used to connect communications for gas outlet and injection. The valve design for a gas cylinder is quite simple. Shut-off valves usually consist of the following general elements:

  1. Brass or steel body.
  2. A stuffing box valve or flywheel connected to the body with a union nut.
  3. Internal locking mechanism with valve and stem.
  4. Sealing gaskets.
  5. Plug for the outlet.

You can look at the design of valves on gas cylinders of each type in more detail in the presented images.

The release of poisonous gases through a safety valve can be harmful to health even in open spaces

Acetylene valves use maximum seals to prevent toxic gases from getting out.

The seals on propane cylinders are simple, so they must withstand a maximum pressure of only 16 atmospheres

Worn valves can leak small amounts of gas, which can lead to unpredictable consequences in enclosed spaces. To prevent such situations, a plug is used on the side fitting, which serves for additional sealing of the cylinder during transportation and long-term storage.

The direction of the threads on the outlet holes depends on the chemicals contained in the cylinders: the right is used for non-flammable gases (oxygen, nitrogen, argon, etc.), and the left is used for flammable gases (hydrogen, acetylene, propane, etc.)

The principle of operation of the assembled gas valve is unremarkable. To supply gas and shut it off, simply slowly turn the flywheel in the appropriate direction.

If previously gas appliances were connected using steel pipes, today this process is carried out using flexible gas hoses, which are characterized by ease of use and quick connection. For this procedure, it is necessary to use high-quality components, each of which serves its purpose.

Connecting hoses for household appliances are necessary in every home. In order to carry out the process of connecting them to gas stoves, water heaters or boilers, it is worth using some additional elements, such as an adapter, gaskets and much more.

Dielectric insert

The dielectric coupling is a cut-off fitting, which helps protect the centers of devices that consume gas from stray current and its influence. This node is very important and effective. It is installed at the junction of the taps and connections to the device that consumes gas. The insert is also fixed between gearboxes and gas meters. In case of its absence, the performance of the devices suffers from stray current, since they are quite susceptible to current surges.

But a spark may also form in the pipeline, which will cause a fire. That is why the installation of dielectric inserts is mandatory according to the safety rules for using gas equipment.

Currently, there are several types of this device.

  • Dielectric couplings with threaded ends. Their installation occurs between gas pipelines and devices that run on blue fuel.
  • Dielectric bushings. These devices are in the form of inserts that do not conduct current. Installation of bushings is carried out at the junction of gas pipeline parts.

Clamp

The main purpose of the worm clamp is reliable fixation, as well as tightness during the process of connecting gas equipment, which uses a rubber hose and fittings. The material for the manufacture of clamps is galvanized steel, which provides the element with strength, durability and ease of installation. Thanks to the above features, clamps ensure tightness of systems.

This type of components has different types of cross-sections, so they can be selected in accordance with the cross-section of pipelines. The worm clamp design has the form of a solid steel strip, which must be put on the hose, and then clamped using an adjustment screw. Some clamps have additional parts that contribute to a tighter connection.

Tee

When laying PVC pipelines, it is often necessary to separate the flows. This function is performed by tees, which look like pipeline fittings. The gas tee can be straight or transitional. Judging by the method of connection to the pipe - welded, threaded.

The stamped version has the ability to withstand from –30 to +3000 degrees Celsius. They are made from pipes that have no seams. Welded products, in turn, are made from sheet steel and welded at the seams. There is a classification of tees according to the type of fastening:

Rubber gasket

Quick-release rubber flange gaskets are also called wafer gaskets. They look like a rubber ring and are used to seal and improve the tightness of a flange connection.

Gas line service life

After installing the hose, you should check its service life and remember the installation date. The product, depending on the type, is designed for a period of 5 to 15 years

It is important not to forget to replace it on time

p, blockquote 39,0,0,0,0 —> p, blockquote 40,0,0,0,1 —>

Guaranteed service life is indicated in the product passport and in the certificate of conformity.

  • rubber hoses (with and without sheath) – 5-year warranty, service life up to 10 years;
  • PVC eyeliner – 12-year warranty, lasts up to 20 years;
  • bellows gas hose - 15 year warranty, does not require replacement up to 30 years.

The gas heating boiler is connected to the main line using a flexible hose.

Selecting and installing a hose for a boiler is a very important matter, because we are talking about gas.

An incorrect connection to the gas pipeline may result in an explosion.

To supply household gas, flexible gas hoses specially designed for this purpose are used. The use of water hoses for this purpose is strictly prohibited.

Instructions for self-connection

Paying a gas technician for installation work is not too high, but many home craftsmen prefer to do everything themselves. This is a feasible task that requires the purchase of components and theoretical knowledge.

To connect, you will also need to prepare the following tools and buy materials:

  • keys: gas No. 1, adjustable 22-24;
  • a screwdriver for tightening the clamp, if required;
  • sealants (Loctite 55 thread, flax, FUM - tape);
  • gasket ½;
  • gas sleeve;
  • ball valve 1/2′;
  • a brush and soap solution, which will be required to control the work.

A rag and a plastic stopper will also come in handy. The rag will be used as a temporary seal against gas leaks. The narrowed edge of the plug must be adjusted to fit the hole in the supply pipe. If during the extraction process a homemade part gets stuck, you can easily remove it with a corkscrew.

Step #1: Removing the old slab

Shutting off the crane when lowering is a primary task to ensure the safety of the work being performed. Next, you need to unscrew the locknut located on the outlet and remove the coupling. If the old slab has a coupling and locknut that were previously painted, this will significantly complicate the process of dismantling them.

Sometimes it is not possible to complete this procedure, then you will need to cut the eyeliner with a grinder.

The gas stove is dismantled after disconnecting the gas main from the conductor pipe. Difficulties that arise with unscrewing the lock nut on a metal pipe can be solved by cutting off the liner

In the process of unscrewing the squeegee located in the lowering valve, it is necessary to hold the valve itself with a key. It does not have to be removed unless you plan to replace the faucet. When they plan to delay the installation of the slab, an additional plug is installed on the lower side.

Step #2: Replace the faucet

There are situations when the wall is located very close to the tap and there is no way to dismantle it. In this case, it is necessary to bend the fastening and install a wedge between the wall and the pipeline. However, this is done in such a way that it is possible to continue doing the work.

It is necessary to prepare a piece of rag sufficient to completely block the pipe after dismantling the old tap. The next thing will be to tear it off without completely unwinding it. You will also need to prepare the selected type of seal. Do not forget to thoroughly ventilate the room during work to eliminate gas vapors.

After unscrewing the tap, the outlet from the pipe is tightly fixed with a finger and then with a wet rag. The main actions are aimed at eliminating gas escape from the pipe as much as possible. In this case, the thread on the branch should not be closed, since it will be covered with the selected sealant.

Before winding the seal, the threads on the lower end must be thoroughly cleaned. Next, its winding is carried out directly. This process ensures a reliable and airtight fixation of the new faucet, which is then tightly screwed on. The last step is to install the previously removed handle on the faucet.

Using soap foam, the tightness of the connection of the faucet and the gas pipe is checked. If the work was completed correctly, installation of the gas hose can continue.

If gas equipment is connected to the mains for the first time, you will definitely need to call a gas technician. In his presence, the equipment is checked for gas leaks when the valve is open. If the gas service worker does not find any violations, he must enter the established brand of stove into the register.

Step #3: Connecting the Flex Hose to the Stove

The external thread of the hose fitting is wrapped with a sealant. After this, it must be screwed into the tap on the branch pipe. The flexible hose is connected to the manifold at the finishing stage.

Next, the stage of test opening the tap on the lower side is mandatory to check for gas leaks. Using soap foam, the joints are treated with a brush. If foaming occurs when opening the gas tap, the work must be redone.

It is necessary to check the threads located on the manifold of the plate. Quite often it is 3/8′. In this case, you will need to install a 1/2′ adapter with a seal

When the work of replacing a gas hose is carried out in a private house where bottled gas is used, an additional replacement of the nozzle with a smaller diameter will be required. If this is not done, the burners will produce too much soot, which likes to settle on furniture and dishes in the kitchen.

Installation and connection

Often gas hoses come on sale with gaskets, but not in all cases. The user should connect the hose to the device and connect the device and the gas riser together, using various components. The angle when working must be correct and comply with the standards.

In order to correctly connect the coupling or bushing with the tap at the junction of the gas pipe and hose, it is worth performing a number of steps one by one.

  • Shut off the gas supply.
  • Leave the burners open to ensure complete combustion of the gas.
  • Prepare several adjustable wrenches.
  • Using the first key, you need to support the tap located on the tube, and with the other, unscrew the nut on the flexible device.
  • Screw the hose nut to the end of the coupling.
  • Carry out a thorough check of the seal quality. This is done by applying a soap solution using a brush.
  • After all the above steps, it is necessary to open the valve and check the operation for the absence of bubbles.

Installing clamps on gas hoses does not require any special skills.

It is important not to forget to follow these rules:

  • maintain the correct distance between devices;
  • using a screwdriver, you need to tighten the clamps, but do not overdo it;
  • It is worth inserting a main element into each of the clamps;
  • Pull the bolts through the holes, screw in the clamps, ensuring a tight fit.

The diameter of the gas hose fitting 9 mm must have a 3/8″ thread, and the nut must be made of steel. It would be optimal to install a fitting made of brass.

How does a cylinder reducer work:

1 Direct gearbox

An ordinary simple gas pressure reducing device consists of two chambers with an area of high and low pressure, separated by a rubber membrane. In addition, the “reducer” is equipped with an inlet and outlet fitting. Modern devices are designed in such a way that the bellows connection is screwed directly into the gearbox. Increasingly, you can find a gas reducer with a third fitting intended for mounting the monomer.

After gas is supplied through the hose and then through the fitting, it enters the chamber. The created gas pressure tends to open the valve. On the reverse side, a shut-off spring presses on the valve, returning it back to a special seat, popularly called a “saddle.” Returning to its place, the valve prevents the uncontrolled flow of high-pressure gas from the cylinder.

Membrane

The second acting force inside the gearbox is a rubber membrane that divides the device into high and low pressure areas. The membrane acts as an “assistant” to high pressure and, in turn, tends to lift the valve from the seat, opening the passage. Thus, the membrane is between two opposing forces. One surface is pressed by a pressure spring (not to be confused with the return spring of the valve), which wants to open the valve, on the other hand, the gas that has already passed into the low pressure zone presses on it.

The compression spring has manual adjustment of the pressure applied to the valve. We advise you to buy a gas reducer with a seat for a pressure gauge, this way it will be easier for you to adjust the spring pressure to the desired output pressure values.

As the gas leaves the reducer to the source of consumption, the pressure in the working space chamber decreases, allowing the pressure spring to straighten. She then begins to push the valve out of the seat, again allowing the device to be filled with gas. Accordingly, the pressure creeps up, pressing on the membrane and reducing the size of the pressure spring. The valve moves back into the seat, narrowing the gap, reducing the gas filling of the reducer. The process is then repeated until the pressure equalizes to the set value.

It should be recognized that gearboxes for direct type gas cylinders, due to their complex design, are not in high demand; reverse type gearboxes are much more widespread; by the way, they are considered devices with a high degree of safety.

2 Reverse gearbox

The operation of the device consists of the opposite action described above. Liquefied blue fuel is supplied to a chamber where high pressure is created. The bottled gas accumulates and prevents the valve from opening. To ensure gas flow into the household appliance, you need to turn the regulator in the direction of the right-hand thread.

On the back of the regulator handle there is a long screw, which, when screwed, presses on the pressure spring. As it contracts, it begins to bend the elastic membrane to the upper position. Thus, the transfer disk, through the rod, exerts pressure on the return spring. The valve begins to move and begins to open slightly, increasing the gap. Blue fuel rushes into the gap and fills the working chamber with low pressure.

In the working chamber, in the gas hose and in the cylinder, the pressure begins to increase. Under the influence of pressure, the membrane is straightened, assisted in this by a constantly compressed spring. As a result of mechanical interactions, the transfer disk lowers, weakening the return spring, which tends to return the valve to its seat. By closing the gap, the flow of gas from the cylinder into the working chamber is naturally limited. Then, with a decrease in pressure in the bellows liner, the reverse process starts.

In a word, as a result of checks and balances, the swing can be balanced and the gas reducer automatically maintains balanced pressure, without sudden jumps and drops.

VALVE DESIGN

An additional supply of tightness is never superfluous, but when replacing shut-off valves on a gas cylinder, the strength of its fastening can become a big problem. The difficulty lies in fixing the cylinder body so that it does not rotate when the valve is unscrewed with a key.

It is with this problem in mind that further step-by-step actions for replacing shut-off valves will be considered. There are many ways to secure the body of a gas cylinder; let’s look at some of them.

You will need the following tools and materials: a pipe wrench, two bolts at least 20 mm long with two nuts and a metal corner profile at least a meter long. Instead of a corner, you can use any other product in which you don’t mind drilling two small holes.

Next, you need to measure the distance between the two nearest holes on the cylinder shoe and drill the corresponding holes from one edge of the metal profile. After this, screw the iron bar to the cylinder body using bolts and lay it on its side. This design will not allow the cylinder to rotate.

Then you need to place your foot on the metal profile, and using your hand, using a key, carefully unscrew the valve.

Step-by-step photo instructions for the process are presented below.

This method is quite dangerous and should only be used by a professional welder with extreme caution. The shoe is grabbed in two places so that after unscrewing the valve, you can easily tear the cylinder off the base.

After welding the body, the fittings are carefully unscrewed using a pipe wrench. Then the internal thread of the cylinder should be cleaned of any remaining sealant.

Methods for fixing a gas cylinder are not limited to the described options. Many alternative methods can be used to secure it. Liquid water condensation sometimes accumulates at the bottom of the container, so after removing the valve, be sure to turn the container over so that water can flow out of it.

In the standard version, propane gas cylinders with a volume of up to 27 liters are equipped with KB-2 valves or VB-2 valves. The second option is considered more reliable. The gearbox is connected to the valve using a fitting thread and a union nut. The degree of tightness of the connection is adjusted with an open-end wrench.

The connections to the valve are not always tight and often lead to gas leaks.

Structurally, the valve consists of the following elements:

  • steel body in the form of a tee with thread;
  • locking part;
  • flywheel;
  • seals.

The type of valve must match the characteristics of the contents of the container and the cylinder itself.

The color of the cylinder indicates what kind of gas is there:

  • red color – propane-butane;
  • black – nitrogen;
  • blue color – oxygen;
  • green – hydrogen;
  • white color – acetylene.

DIY Gas Valve Troubleshooting Guide

A modern gas cylinder complies with GOST 949-72 and is a durable all-welded element made of carbon or alloy steel. According to the standard, the thickness of the cylinder walls cannot be less than 2 millimeters. In order for the gas inside to press equally on the upper and lower parts, they are made concave and convex.

The cylinders themselves, depending on the substance in them and its quantity, can have different sizes, shapes and colors. But one thing remains unchanged - any gas cylinder must have passport data assigned at the factory. In the upper part there is a neck equipped with a thread into which the valve is inserted.

  • Valve malfunction - the flywheel does not turn or there are other problems;
  • Corrosion, dents or other damage on the body of the cylinder and valve part;
  • The inspection date has expired;
  • You can feel the gas in the air;
  • A crooked or damaged cylinder shoe;
  • There is no plug on the fitting.

The cylinder itself is solid, and it’s unlikely that anything will break there. Therefore, the majority of malfunctions concern gas valves.

Procedure:

  • Repairs are carried out in a well-ventilated area;
  • We open the shut-off assembly to allow the remaining gas to escape;
  • To turn the valve manually or with a gas wrench, you need to warm up this element. In this case, there is no danger, since the cylinder contains only gas vapors, and not their mixture with air, which is explosive in the first place. The only thing that needs to be monitored is moderate heating of the structure, since overheating can increase the pressure in the cylinder. The point of warming up is that the metal expands and it becomes possible to unscrew the valve even manually, or with a slight lever force in the form of the same gas wrench;
  • After removing the element, the conical fitting is sealed - a sealant or fluoroplastic tape is applied to it;
  • A new valve is installed, after which the fact and time of repair are entered into the cylinder passport. Installation is carried out with a special torque wrench, which makes it possible to correctly dose the forces and not break the thread. The maximum pressure allowed in this case is 480 Nm for steel and 250 for brass valves;
  • Having removed the valve from the cylinder, it is necessary to drain the condensate from it, if we are talking about propane-butane, which we widely use. This procedure is practically never performed by anyone, despite the fact that it is extremely desirable. However, it is necessary to drain it away from residential buildings, since this condensate has an extremely unpleasant odor.

Requirements for production processes and technical characteristics of gas cylinders are regulated by rather old GOSTs 949-73 and 15860-84.

The maximum operating pressure in the devices ranges from 1.6 MPa to 19.6 MPa, and the wall thickness can vary from 1.5 to 8.9 mm.

The protective cap on gas cylinders can be screwed onto a special neck thread, completely closing the valve, or it can be welded to the body and only protect the valve from accidental external impacts.

A standard gas cylinder assembly consists of the following elements:

  1. Cylinder body.
  2. Valve with shut-off valves.
  3. Valve closing cap.
  4. Backing rings for fixation and transportation.
  5. Support shoe.

The information stamped on the cylinder is used by service centers when refueling and re-inspecting equipment, so you should not paint it heavily

The bottom of the cylinders is shaped like a hemisphere for uniform distribution of internal pressure. For better stability of the body, a shoe is welded on the outside, on the lower edges of which there are often holes for attaching the cylinder to horizontal surfaces.

You will learn about the types of gas cylinders and the features of their markings in this article, which we recommend viewing and reading.

  • It is prohibited to use faulty gas cylinders;
  • It is prohibited to store cylinders in places of permanent residence of people;
  • Do not open the valve very quickly: the head electrified by the gas stream can cause an explosion;
  • periodically check the serviceability and tightness of the valve;
  • It is prohibited to use or have two propane-butane cylinders at the same workplace at the same time.

What is better: exchange or refill?

There are two ways to obtain a cylinder of gas necessary for the operation of a gas boiler, stove, outdoor lighting lines, etc.: fill your container or exchange it for another that has already been filled. In the first case, the cylinders are left at the station for 1-2 days, the consumer receives his full container.

In the second - a quick exchange of an empty container for a filled one. Consumers can make their own choice about which method to use. The second method is faster, but you get someone else's equipment, which may not be the newest. The cost depends on the type and volume of gases. Standard case: 200-300 rubles.

What problems can occur when refueling?

Nuances that are important to know about filling gas cylinders:

  1. Some Chinese cylinders have thin walls. They are not designed for heavy loads. It must be remembered that cheap equipment may not pay off due to high risk.
  2. Active gases are prone to fire and explosions, so you need to especially carefully monitor the volume (85%) when filling with propane, oxygen, methane.
  3. To use household gas at low temperatures, it is better to use winter propane-butane mixtures, with the advantage of propane, since butane is of little use for winter use.

In order to prevent the occurrence of the listed problems and risks associated with replenishing the supply of liquefied explosive substances, it is necessary to think through the process in advance and provide for all the nuances.

A high-quality cylinder and compliance with operating rules are the key to safety

This characteristic should be treated with special attention.

Replacement of the cylinder with a new one, repair

Sooner or later the cylinder wears out, the valve may fail, and the surface will begin to delaminate. Almost every city has a cylinder replacement or repair point. You can give away the old one and get a new product, with an additional payment of approximately 1,500 rubles. This is a good alternative to buying new equipment.

If the valve is repairable, it is repaired or completely replaced. The cylinder itself can be sanded and painted. The cost of a new empty propane cylinder: from 2,500 to 600 rubles, depending on the manufacturer’s materials.

It is more profitable to purchase large cylinders - a 50-liter container is enough to cook food on the stove for a small family for 2 months

Graphite gaskets

A wide range of sealing materials are made from graphite, the use of which, like the use of fluoroplastic, has become one of the significant trends in the development of sealing technologies. Due to its anti-friction properties, graphite is very effective in sealing moving joints. But this material is also used as a seal for fixed joints. It is used in the manufacture of spiral wound gaskets. To seal flange connections of fittings, reinforced graphite sheet, graphite foil, graphite-based sealing tapes, thermally expanded graphite gaskets (TEG), and graphite gaskets (PFG) are used.

Thanks to the variety of materials used for the manufacture of gaskets, manufacturers of pipeline fittings and those who operate them are able to ensure the required tightness of the connections sealed with their use. And there are quite a lot of such connections, both in the pipeline fittings themselves and in pipeline systems as a whole.

What you need to know: valuable tips

Before purchasing a flexible hose, it is necessary to check the size of the thread at the outlet of the plate, its classification and whether it is straight or angular. If the outlet is of a direct type (directed into the wall), you must purchase a sleeve with a square at the end.

The gas hose should not be painted - this will accelerate its cracking. A more attractive look can be created by covering it with special paper or oilcloth.

It is also strictly forbidden to tightly seal gas communications with false plasterboard panels and other structures - this will make it difficult to carry out service work on individual elements.

To camouflage the gas supply system, a collapsible box is used, which can be easily dismantled if necessary. In this case, there will be constant access to all structural elements of the gas system.

It is forbidden to use unnecessary connections. Independent complication of a gas structure, according to technical regulations, may entail a fine or disconnection from gas supply

If a technician has been called to connect a gas water heater or stove, it is necessary to check that the work is being done correctly: the excess tap from the tap on the lower side must be unscrewed, the flexible line must be directly connected exclusively to the tap located on the branch pipe, and its other end - only to the outlet of the gas stove .

It is also possible to use an adapter. Any additional installations are prohibited.

Classification of paronite gaskets according to GOST 481-80

Different types of paronite seals have different technical characteristics. They determine for which connections and environments a particular gasket material can be used. supplies the following main types of paronite products:

  • PON (general purpose paronite):
    Suitable for: fixed smooth joints, the pressure of which does not exceed 4 MPa (40 kgf/cm²); flange connections of the tongue-and-groove and tongue-and-groove types.
  • PMB (oil and petrol resistant paronite):
    Suitable for: fixed smooth joints, the pressure of which does not exceed 4 MPa (40 kgf/cm²); flange connections of the tongue-and-groove and tongue-and-groove types. Used in pipelines that transport oil, petroleum products, petroleum, etc.
  • PMB-1:
    Suitable for: fixed smooth joints, the pressure of which does not exceed 2.5 MPa (25 kgf/cm²); tongue-and-groove and tongue-and-groove flanges. A modification whose operating temperature is expanded from -5 to +250 degrees.
  • PC (acid-resistant paronite):
    Suitable for: fixed smooth joints; tongue-and-groove and tongue-and-groove flanges; spiral wound gaskets as a soft filler. Designed for the chemical industry.
  • PA (paronite reinforced with mesh):
    Suitable for: fixed smooth joints, the pressure of which does not exceed 4 MPa (40 kgf/cm²); flange connections of the tongue-and-groove and tongue-and-groove types. It has increased mechanical strength, but is not suitable for chemically aggressive environments.
  • PE (electrolyser paronite):
    Suitable for: sealing cells that are assembled into a battery in electrolysers, to ensure electrical isolation of the cells from each other. For the connection to be airtight, a pressure of 10 MPa (100 kgf/cm²) is required for electrolysers that operate under a pressure of 0.02 MPa (0.2 kgf/cm²) and 30 MPa (300 kgf/cm²) for electrolyzers that operate under pressure 10 MPa (100 kgf/cm²).

The dimensions of paronite gaskets are determined by GOST and depend on the type of gasket. In this case, the nominal diameter (DN) can be from 10 to 800 mm, the outer diameter of the passage (D) - from 29 to 877 mm, the internal diameter (d) - from 14 to 820 mm, respectively. In addition, by agreement with the customer, it is possible to manufacture paronite gaskets according to individual sizes. We produce products of any complexity or configuration.

Range of sizes and gasket models

The effectiveness of a gas cylinder gasket depends on its size and the dimensions of the unit. In the case of transport rings, the inner diameter should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the cylinder. For sealing rings inside connections, exact matching dimensions are important.

Washers for external structures are selected according to the outer and inner diameter. All types of sealing gaskets are subject to heavy loads, so their compatibility with equipment depends on pressure indicators.

Rings for necks and reducers have a flat configuration. Their sizes are regulated by GOST 15180-86. The document described the parameters of flat elastic gaskets made of fluoroplastic, paronite, rubber and materials based on them. Standardized products seal flanges and connecting parts, which are elements of the gas cylinder valve and various fittings.

Gas cylinders can be high and low, wide and narrow, with parts of different proportions - the gaskets for them are noticeably different in configuration, even if they have the same purpose

The size range of gaskets corresponds to the nominal bore (DN, Dу) in millimeters and the nominal pressure (PN, Pnom, Pu) in MPa. Both indicators are also called nominal.

The first displays the internal diameter of the structural element through which the gas moves. The nominal pressure acts as a conditional indicator, which was established based on strength calculations at a temperature of +20 °C.

Shipping spacers are used during transportation and storage. The rings protect the container from damage, damage to the paint layer, and impacts against other containers. Products for gas cylinders are produced in accordance with TU 2500-376-00152106-94. The peculiarity of these rings is their circular cross-section.

Some products:

  1. OH-1101: 25 ±1.3, 215 ±3.
  2. OH-1102: 25 ±1, 210 ±3.2.
  3. OH-2202: 15.6 ±1, 285 ±3.
  4. OH-3303: 25 ±1.6, 140 ±2.5.

The first indicator displays the cross-sectional diameter of the ring in millimeters, the subsequent indicator displays the internal diameter (mm). These products are used under conditions of normal external pressure and temperature range -40…+40 °C.

Metal-plastic for gas

Metal-plastic pipes can also be used for gas supply. The inside of pipes of this type is made of polyethylene, which is already familiar to us.

Due to the fact that metal-plastic pipes are supplied in coils, it becomes possible to lay a fairly long gas pipeline without using a large number of connections.

If the pipes still need to be connected, then only press fittings must be used. With their help, you can ensure the tightness of the connection, which will retain its properties for a long time. However, to make such a connection you will need a special device.

Checking tightness and completing work

When checking the tightness of the valve connection, you will need to pump gas under pressure into the gas cylinder.

This can be done in two ways:

  1. Pump gas using compressor equipment or a car pump.
  2. Connect two cylinders with a hose, the first of which is empty (tested), and the second is filled with gas.

First, under the control of a pressure gauge, you need to fill the test cylinder with gas with a pressure of 1.5-2 atmospheres. After this, soap foam is applied to the connection and the tap is opened slightly.

If soap bubbles are not inflated anywhere, then the connection is sealed. But if even slight swelling of foam appears, you will have to re-tighten the valve.

When immersing the valve in water, it is advisable to close the side fitting with a plug so that water and suspended particles contained in it do not get into the locking mechanism

If the cylinder is small, then you can immerse its valve in a small bowl of water and see for bubbles.

After replacing the shut-off valves, the corresponding mark must be placed in the gas cylinder passport.

It should be remembered that the methods described above for replacing a used valve are applicable only to metal tanks. If you have a composite gas storage cylinder, you cannot act this way because of the possibility of damaging the flask and breaking its seal.

In production, the degree of tightness of equipment is checked with compressed air - pneumatic tests are carried out. This is not possible in everyday life, so you can use a soap solution. The liquid is applied to all valve parts. If there is a leak, the solution begins to bubble. It is recommended to check the valve several times in a row in the open and closed state. For each new test, new foam is used. You cannot check the tightness with a match or lighter - there is a risk of fire and even explosion.

Screwing in new shut-off valves

There is an unspoken ban on carrying out such work, especially at home, but sometimes there is simply no other choice but to carry out the replacement yourself

It is important to remember that replacing a gas cylinder valve with your own hands requires a person to adhere to maximum safety precautions, since the health and lives of other people directly depend on his actions

First of all, it is necessary to monitor fire safety. You should not open the valve suddenly; also, when replacing, you need to make sure that there are no other cylinders in the room. Situations when it is necessary to replace a valve are not uncommon. Despite all the apparent complexity, the replacement procedure is quite simple and accessible.

Replacing the valve on a gas cylinder should be done without haste, since it is necessary to ensure compliance with the technical data of the element. The main indicators are as follows: propane valve - operating pressure up to 1.6 MPa. Replacing the valve on a gas cylinder yourself requires that the pressure does not exceed these values.

Before tightening the valve, all connected parts must be degreased to prevent clogging of the locking mechanism. To do this, you can use a cloth with regular detergent or moistened with white alcohol. After this, rinse the surfaces with plain water and allow them to dry.

A new valve is never screwed to a cylinder with bare threads. It is imperative to use a sealant: special thread compound or fluoroplastic fum tape. They are applied to the lower fitting and only after that the valve is tightened.

The thickness of the gas fum tape is greater than sanitary tape and is 0.1 - 0.25 mm, and its reel should be yellow. The tape is wound with tension in 3-4 layers. It is better to twist it once again when it breaks than to make the seal loose.

It is advisable to tighten the valve with a torque wrench. Steel shut-off valves are screwed with a maximum force of 480 Nm, and brass valves - 250 Nm. After clamping the valve, you can proceed to subsequent steps to test the tightness of the resulting connection.

According to the rules of safe operation, independent installation of valves on gas cylinders is strictly prohibited. If the situation is hopeless, you can very carefully try to replace the device yourself. Technically, the work itself is not difficult, but breaking the seal of the cylinder is always fraught with risk.

To begin with, it is worth considering the process of replacing the valve by a technician at a specialized enterprise. Removal of the fittings is carried out using a cylinder valve wrench. A dynamic key is used for installation. The tightening force should not exceed 250 N for brass fittings and 480 N for steel fittings. Before delivery of the gas cylinder, the threads are sealed with paint.

In handicraft conditions, you can try to remove and install the valve manually. To increase the tightness, use FUM tape.

The replacement process will look like this:

  • the cylinder is completely emptied of gas away from residential premises;
  • carefully unscrew the valve;
  • smoothly remove the device without damaging the case;
  • gas condensate is poured out;
  • install a new valve;
  • check the tightness of the device.

Why do cylinders become covered with frost?

Here you can also debunk one of the most common misconceptions. It is generally accepted that if such a device “freezes,” it becomes covered with frost. Some even argue that such equipment should be insulated with blankets, old coats and other improvised items. So, the frost will disappear faster if you leave the gas container as is, without helping it “thaw” with warm things.

The bottom of a gas cylinder that is covered with frost

The appearance of frost can be explained by a number of physical processes that occur inside the structure when it is connected to stoves or burners. At such moments, active fuel consumption is observed, therefore, large volumes of gas liquid turn into a vapor fraction. And this phenomenon is always accompanied by high heat consumption, which is why the surface of the cylinder becomes much colder than the temperature in the surrounding space. Moisture in the air space begins to appear in the form of condensation on the walls of the installation, subsequently turning into frost. This is an absolutely natural phenomenon that you don’t need to do anything about.

Moreover, all attempts to use artificial “insulation” violate safety standards during operation, and also affect the deterioration of heat exchange between the device and the environment and affect the gas supply conditions. If your burner did not delight you with a grandiose flame, then after your “maneuvers” with the blanket, it may stop working altogether.

Do not insulate gas cylinders with anything!

In general, when connecting high-power gas devices, you need to be aware that the gas cylinder has limitations on the speed of release. This means that the liquid fuel turns into the vapor stage gradually. For example, a 50-liter cylinder can provide about 500 grams of gas in 60 minutes. This is equivalent to a power of 6-7 kW. In the cold season, this figure is halved if the equipment is located outside. In summer the situation is reversed: the maximum flow rate increases.

In any case, we can conclude that frost is evidence that the cylinder cannot cope with high fuel consumption. This may cause a temporary drop in gas pressure and equipment failure. If this happens, it is better to stop consumption and wait until there is a sufficient vapor cap.

Sealing element dimensions

As a rule, if you buy any product at a plumbing store, the necessary gaskets are already included in the kit. Sometimes they may not be included in the kit, so seals will have to be purchased separately.

When choosing, the main rule applies - the diameter and technical characteristics of the new gasket must completely coincide with the old one

An important characteristic is the diameter, which is indicated by 3 numbers (d*D*s):

  • inner diameter;
  • external diameter;
  • gasket thickness.

Indicators can be applied to the sealing elements themselves, on their packaging, or placed in the instructions. The most common standard sizes (in millimeters) are:

The following types are used for heated towel rails:

Conclusions and useful video on the topic

Eliminating gas leaks using available tools and replacing the internal valve gasket:

Gas cylinder seals should be replaced at the first sign of damage or loss of seal. They are made from highly flammable materials such as paronite, fluoroplastic and special rubber. Rings are produced for containers and units of any size, so there is no doubt about the quality of the seal.

In hardware stores there are gaskets for gas cylinders of 12, 27, 50 liters and containers with less common sizes. The cylinders themselves should be stored outside residential buildings, apartments and technical floors, away from escape routes.

Some materials can be used as a replacement for paronite, depending on operating conditions.

Paronite is a cushioning sheet material. It is produced by pressing rubber, asbestos and powder components. The material has found wide application in many areas - the gas industry, in the arrangement of hot and cold water supply, in metalworking and electronics, in the oil and gas and chemical industries and in many other areas

Paronite should be used with caution in systems where there are sudden temperature changes.

Mandatory Precautions

Before replacing the gas cylinder valve, precautions must be taken. Work must be carried out in such a way as to protect people from potential hazards and keep the equipment in working condition.

The following precautions are used when preparing to replace a gas valve:

  1. The remaining contents of the cylinder can only be vented in an open space. An exception can be made only for nitrogen, air and argon.
  2. The work area should be well ventilated, although it is advisable to carry out work outside.
  3. There should only be one closed gas cylinder within the workplace.
  4. The flywheel must be unscrewed slowly to prevent electrification.
  5. You can begin replacing the valve only after the pressure in the cylinder and outside has been completely equalized.

When screwing the valve into the cylinder, fum tape or special lubricants are used, which provide increased tightness and strength of the connection. When replacing a faucet, such seals greatly complicate the process of dismantling it. To solve this problem, you can heat the valve with a hairdryer.

There is no need to save on gas fum tape, because high-quality material will eliminate the need to twist the valve due to gas leaks

You can heat the shut-off valves only after bleeding the gas from the cylinder and closing the tap. In this case, the procedure is safe and will not lead to unpredictable situations.

An alternative to a hairdryer is to wrap a cloth around the valve and then pour boiling water over it. With this heating method, any suitable plug should be screwed onto the outlet fitting to prevent water from entering there.

After taking all precautions and warming up the shut-off valves, you can begin to unscrew the valve, which can be a difficult task at home.

If, in addition to replacing the cylinder shut-off device, you also need to replace the valve installed on the gas pipeline, we advise you to study the procedure and rules for performing this work.
