Victorian houses in the USA. Part two: what's inside?
Victorian houses are generally very attractive from the outside. Strictly white, richly bright, carved, somewhat airy, with or without turrets, bay windows. But how comfortable are they to live in in the twenty-first century? I propose to look at some of them and evaluate not the facades, but the internal structure of the house. Most of the photos are from Zillow. In the text, tax refers to real estate tax.
What does an interior made in the “Victorian style” imply? The presence of a fireplace, most often more than one. An abundance of wood in everything: wooden floors, carved trim, wooden furniture, etc. Wallpaper with floral patterns. Narrow stairs. And an abundance of things - no empty space. We remember that the house emphasized the status of the owner, so the interior was filled with furniture, trinkets, flowers, clocks, mirrors, paintings, carpets, curtains and curtains. “Victorian” interiors are “stuffy”.
Of course, modern owners are not obliged to follow the behests of their ancestors, which is why you can often see restrained interiors. The garages of such houses are detached.

- And the guests were often and in large numbers. After all, parties were held frequently in the Victorian era. That's the explanation for the spacious living and dining rooms. And in a spacious kitchen it’s easier to prepare dinner for a horde of hungry guests.
- Lunch is an indispensable component of such receptions. The guests, full of delicious dishes, were clearly in a positive mood to evaluate both the hosts and the atmosphere.
- The discrepancy between small latrines, bedrooms and spacious living rooms and dining rooms forced people to decorate everything they could - from the facades of the house to the wall above the fireplace (to hide the empty space). The echo was literally drowned in all this splendor.
Those who like free space, who prefer not to clutter their home with unnecessary, non-functional things, will not like the Victorian style. Although…

House in the English style
No matter how different the directions of the English style in the architecture of private houses may be, there are still some key features common to all these buildings:
- two floors;
- using red brick or natural stone as the main material for walls;
- low foundation;
- high tiled roof with attic and dormer windows;
- window frames with frequent binding.
The interior design of a house in the English style is based on clear zoning of space. The central room on the ground floor is usually a large living room with a fireplace. A kitchen, dining room and guest rooms can also be located here. A bedroom, children's room, library or study, as a rule, occupies the second floor. The attic, depending on its size, can be used as a separate room, or act as a room for drying clothes or storing things.
Garages, workshops and other outbuildings are traditionally located separately, in the backyard, not adjacent to the mansion. However, recently, this rule is periodically violated in favor of the convenience of the owners.
When designing and building houses in the English style, one should not forget about the appropriate landscape design. A truly stylish mansion is unthinkable without a carefully thought-out plant environment, including carefully trimmed shrubs, elegant flower beds, and thickets of ivy, picturesquely entwining the walls.
