German-style house: restraint of composition (51 photos)

A traditional German style house features light colored walls with wooden beams placed at different angles. This is not just German national house design. This type of frame structure of a building is called half-timbered, from the German Fachwerk (fach werk - panels and building, structure). The building has no central load-bearing elements; the structure consists of spatial sections formed by wooden beams. The space between them is filled with adobe materials, less often with stone or brick.

Three-story house in Bavarian style

The facade of the house in the German style is very similar to an enlarged illustration for the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm or V. Hauff. The heyday of half-timbered wood was in the Middle Ages. Frame construction has European roots, but quickly gained popularity throughout the world.

Features of a German-style house

The half-timbered frame consists of three main elements:

  • beam (horizontal wooden beam);
  • stand (vertical wooden support);
  • braces (wooden beams located at an angle).

It is the braces that give strength and maximum stability to houses in the Bavarian style. In addition, cunning and sophisticated methods of precise joining of parts are used for fastening - truly German quality.

As mentioned above, the free space between the wooden frame structures is filled with adobe materials (hence the white color of the walls). Clay material is a mixture of clay and various construction waste (straw, brushwood, wood chips, etc.). The panels of the house are covered with plaster, but the wooden elements of the frame always remain visible, decorating the facade of the building. You can often find house designs with an attic and a terrace.

Modern house in German style

The color of the wood against the white background of the clay walls of the house in the Bavarian style looks unusually elegant and restrained. Modern designers often use polymer panels, decorative stone or brick to decorate walls. You can often find combined facade finishing options, for example, a combination of decorative brickwork and plastered walls. Of course, it is not necessary to build a house on a frame basis. You can decorate the external facade of any building in the style of a Bavarian village. For exterior facade decoration the following is most often used:

  • Polyurethane panels.
  • Cement particle boards.
  • Waterproof plywood.

Modern house designs often have a classic rectangular shape or protrusions of horizontal elements. Attics and terraces are popular. But an interesting feature of ancient buildings was the presence of storey projections: each subsequent floor was wider than the previous one. Most likely, this type of construction ensured that water would flow from the roof onto the ground, bypassing the front of the house.

The roofs of houses of German style and design have many slopes and are covered with tiles. Interestingly, the color of the roofing is most often red, brown, brick or burgundy.

Modern half-timbered

Since the half-timbered structure has comparative simplicity, durability and reliability, it still has its admirers today. Disadvantages include wood's susceptibility to rot and mold, as well as poor fire resistance. Therefore, the trend in European construction is houses using half-timbered technology, but with the replacement of all wooden elements with reinforced concrete ones. They are often given a modern look with the help of panoramic glazing.

There is also the so-called “half-timbered” type of building. In this case, what looks like braces, supports and posts are in fact not load-bearing structural elements, but just wooden strips laid over the plastered facades. Visual similarity has been achieved, but these structures do not have the practical advantages of half-timbered houses.

Interior in German style

If a private house is built according to a frame half-timbered design, then the interior decoration must match the external facade. Often the frame is displayed not only on the facade, but also in the interior. It would be especially appropriate to use the traditional Bavarian style to design a country house with an attic.

Modern interior in German style

The interior should be dominated by warm colors of natural materials: wood, stone, clay. Modern frame buildings are erected in the shortest possible time. After construction, they do not shrink, and this is very important for interior finishing work. The absence of shrinkage makes it possible to begin arranging the interior space immediately after the construction of the building frame, realizing your design ideas in the interior.

Classic interior in German style

Wall decoration should be unobtrusive and natural. You can use decorative stones that resemble cobblestones, or leave the walls as they are - white, covering them with a layer of plaster. If thermal insulation is necessary, you will have to choose what you want to preserve: the original facade of the building or the interior decor made of wooden beams. But fortunately, the interior design can be easily restored by adding elements of imitation beams and posts.

Simple interior in German style

Wood (laminate or parquet) is relevant as a floor covering. You can use tiles with imitation wood in the interior. Short-pile carpets would be appropriate for the living room and bedrooms. The color of the carpet should be chosen based on the general color scheme, i.e. any shades of brown, beige or white.

It would be good if the window frames were made of wood rather than plastic. The half-timbering technique is good because it allows you to glaze almost the entire building around the perimeter, even the roof, by installing roof windows.

German-style building designs are often created with an attic in the attic and a small garden in front of the house. Often, shutters and small boxes with geranium, azalea or petunia flowers are hung on the outside of the windows. And if the house is equipped with a terrace, then it must be strewn with flowers. Heather and blackberries are often planted behind the terrace. The floral design uniquely complements the appearance of a Bavarian-style home.

Hallway

The amount of furniture in the hallway is minimal - a closed wardrobe, hangers and a small bench. In a spacious room, you can place a small cabinet for storing things and hang a mirror above it.

For added coziness, you can add a short-pile carpet that won't accumulate dirt.

To decorate the space, you can add floor vases and decorative boxes for small items.

Furniture and interior accessories

For interior design in the German style, the furniture must be suitable - laconic design, but made of high-quality material. Most often, designers give preference to furniture made of wood.

German style in the interior is close to Italian. Natural materials are used, the color scheme sticks to warm colors, and decorative stone decoration of the walls adds a Gothic flavor. In the kitchen, the stove area can be styled as a stove arch, and old clay jugs or pots with fresh flowers can be placed on shelves as accessories.

Vintage German style in the interior

A German-style country house cannot do without a fireplace. If for some reason it is not possible to install a real fireplace, you can purchase an electric one. It is safe, does not require firewood, but looks no less cozy.

When decorating the interior, you should pay attention to lighting: ceiling lamps, sconces, floor lamps. The more light there is inside the room, the better, this is an axiom. Massive chandeliers made of dark metals with stained glass shades or imitation candles will look very interesting. The same applies to floor and wall lamps. Perhaps these are one of the few interior elements that can boast unusual curves and shapes.

German style house projects

A fairly classic version of the project is a one-story house with an attic on the second floor. That is, the house turns out to be two floors, but the ceiling of the second floor is also the inside of the roof. On the ground floor there is a kitchen, dining room and living room. And the second floor - the attic - is reserved for living rooms. Projects of three-story houses are rare.

Small house in German style

You can create German-style house designs yourself by coming up with your own layout. You can contact a professional designer to draw up a project, taking into account all the customer’s preferences. Another option is construction companies offering turnkey houses. As a rule, such companies already have several ready-made projects, among which there will definitely be a German-style house design - they are so popular!
