All types of fences for home and garden, overview of options with photos

When passing by other people's property, we first of all turn our attention to the fence. This element of the estate stands out against the background of the surroundings of the house and the surrounding area. From the appearance of the fence, it becomes clear how decent the owner is and whether he takes care of his property.

Have you already come up with a rough site design?

YesNot yet

Of course, fences and fences vary in characteristics and price. Not every owner can afford to build a massive brick fence with forged elements. But in most cases this is not required: even a cheap fence, if cared for and chosen correctly, will look like a million dollars. And vice versa.

We will tell you about the nuances of selecting a fence, possible types and the most profitable options for summer houses and private cottages.

Summary

Inexpensive fences are:

  • wattle of branches, vines;
  • photo grid on a simple frame / welded mesh;
  • fence;
  • metal grating (welded mesh);
  • made of slate;
  • Rabitz;
  • metal picket fence.

Fences from the middle price segment:

  • wooden - picket fence, herringbone, checkerboard, lattice, blinds, ranch;
  • from corrugated sheet;
  • made of polycarbonate;
  • from artificial stone;
  • made of simple ceramic bricks;
  • metal ranch,
  • Alpine wicker made of wood;
  • metal blinds and wickerwork;
  • gabions;
  • from blocks;
  • from timber;
  • plastic;
  • mirror based on PVC.

Fences are expensive:

  • from agglomerates and wild stone;
  • made of clinker bricks;
  • forged;
  • glass.

Combined fences with inserts made from expensive raw materials are also more expensive than others. And the budget for a hedge depends entirely on the seedlings: the larger and stronger they are, the more expensive they are.

Fencing functions

A fence is an integral part of every territory. It does not matter what exactly is located in this area. In any case, the fence performs a number of basic tasks. These include:

  1. Perimeter security. Perhaps this is what home owners focus on to a greater extent. A high solid fence will make it difficult for unauthorized persons to enter your territory. A properly installed fence will also protect the perimeter from encroachment by pest animals.
  2. Home decoration. The fence complements and improves the composition of your estate. The overall panorama looks finished and well-groomed. The attractive appearance of a fence can distract the attention of passers-by from the shortcomings of the territory of the house or the decor of the building itself.
  3. Site confidentiality. Not all fences have this function. Blank types of walls allow you not to advertise what is happening on the site. Partially, the confidentiality point has something in common with the first function. Protecting privacy can discourage intruders from crossing this type of fence.
  4. Improves the atmosphere. Modern fences are produced in various colors, designs, and styles. This opens up space for experimentation and giving the environment a positive feel.
  5. Status appearance. For some this is a controversial point. However, a nice original fence will cement your status as an ambitious homeowner. There is no need to choose exclusively the most expensive types of materials - a rich effect is achieved with a laconic form and bold decorative solutions.

The specific type of fencing is responsible for the complete performance of these functions. Some species meet two points, while others answer all of the above.

Below we will analyze the characteristics of fences using exact examples.

How to make a wooden picket fence

Traditional wooden fences

You can find both the simplest options
made from picket fences and boards
, and those combined
with stone and metal structures
.

Wooden fences

quick to build and relatively easy to repair. Their only drawback is their fragility. The most commonly used fence is made from a picket fence - it does not block the light in small areas of the house's front gardens and does not fence off the residents of the house from the rest of the world with a solid fence wall.

Simple wooden picket fences do not have a foundation; its role is played by buried pillars

with compaction around them with stone chips or crushed stone, compacted with soil.

The parts of the fence that are most quickly damaged are the ones dug into the ground - the support posts
, which rot and then, at the slightest pressure from the side, fall along with the fence.

To avoid this, cover the underground part of the wooden pillar

The old proven method also helps - burning with a blowtorch, forming a carbon layer 2...3 mm thick
, which protects the wood from fungal attack.

The top of a wooden fence
is always arranged so
that there are no horizontal surfaces
, because
Water and snow stagnate on them - moisture that saturates the wood. Therefore, the upper ends of the fence boards
are sharpened, making cuts on both sides.

Expert advice on choosing a fence

There are many nuances that you need to pay attention to when choosing the type of fence. Here are some of them:

  1. There is a desire to close yourself off from everyone and everything - then corrugated sheets.
  2. You need a ventilated fence - then a chain-link fence.
  3. An option that is not visible with a picket fence is strips installed on both sides of the joist in a checkerboard pattern.
  4. If the task is simply to mark the boundaries of the site - then a chain-link.
  5. If you want to install a classic design, there are a huge number of options.

When planning a fence for a summer house or a private home, you should first of all focus on your preferences, and only then on the cost of materials. But even a cheap fence, made with taste and imagination, can look much more interesting than an expensive one.

Build a fence yourself or turn to specialists?

You can make a beautiful fence with your own hands. It will take time, tools and materials, as well as some experience in construction - for example, in mixing cement mortar.

The easiest way is to make a fence from corrugated sheets with your own hands. Order delivery of metal profiles, pipes for supports and logs from a metal warehouse, buy cement and sand. Arm yourself with a shovel (or better yet, a drill), string, tape measure, screwdriver and welding. How exactly to make a fence from corrugated board is the topic of a large separate article with photos and videos. You will need at least 3-4 days, accurate calculations, hard work and patience. A wooden fence will take even more time, and stretching the mesh in terms of labor costs is about the same as installing corrugated sheets.

In general, any fence requires measurements, excavation work, special tools, and consumables. If you do not plan to do a lot of construction and repair work in the future, it will be more economical and logical to use the help of professionals.
