How to make a wooden door with your own hands - step by step guide
The market offers a wide range of different doors. But sometimes it is difficult to choose a model that fully meets the owner’s needs. There are plenty of reasons - a significant difference in dimensions (block/opening), low quality products, poor external design, high cost, and so on. For a person who is familiar with household tools, making interior doors with your own hands is not a problem. In many cases, this solution is the most rational.
Mechanisms
A barn door is otherwise called a hanging door due to the mechanism of fastening and movement. This mechanism consists of an upper guide, which often has the form of a hexagonal or round rod in cross-section, as well as a forged plate in the shape of a rectangle. However, there are parts whose cross-section resembles the English letter “J”.
The movement of the attribute is carried out thanks to rollers - they are attached by plates to the upper outer surface of the canvas or its upper end. To prevent the product from flying out to the side when opening or closing the entrance, there are special limiters on the upper track, which in some models can perform a damping function. To prevent the door from running in different directions, special guide parts of two types are installed in the lower part of the opening: in the form of the letter “P” and slightly wider than the entire leaf of the product or the letter “T” included in the groove of the lower part of the attribute.
The mechanisms have different designs, which depend on the appearance of three components: rollers, plates for attaching them to the canvas, and guide.

Such mechanisms can be made independently, but ready-made fittings are expensive, so they are replaced with other parts. Instead of a track, you can use an iron gas or water pipe, install the door on two wheels, and screw two hooks into the end of the upper section of the canvas, and their diameter should be slightly larger than the diameter of the pipe.
What you need for work
In order to make a stylish sliding door from scratch, you will need the following:
- wide and thick durable boards;
- boards for decorating the door leaf - edging and cross strips;
- beautiful massive forged handle;
- carpenter's or universal quick-drying glue;
- wood decoration products;
- wood filler or similar putty;
- drill, hardware and screwdriver;
- rail and wheels for attaching a sliding door;
- saw and grinder.
In the presented project, the door is decorated with tinting impregnation. But, of course, it can be formatted differently. For example, chalk paint looks very impressive.

Barn doors are made from different materials, so they can have an interesting and unusual design and be made in completely different colors: from white or black to purple or yellow. Depending on this product there are the following types:
