Feedback from owners about dry toilets for dachas and country houses will help you understand the models and their capabilities

Many new summer residents are not even aware of the problematic nature of the toilet in the country. Most people are accustomed to the fact that there is a house on the site that they can go to if necessary. They don’t even think about where it all goes later, and what kind of care is needed so that there is no terrible smell and flies. When purchasing a dacha, some buyers don’t even bother to look at the existing toilet. But the problem will not be long in coming. Within a couple of hours after the transaction was completed, the new owners enter the toilet house and are horrified by what they see.

Criterias of choice

The choice of a dry closet should be approached consciously, taking into account the intended place of use, the required characteristics and the individual needs of users. The selection criteria, which are compiled based on customer reviews, will help answer the question of how to choose the right dry closet. A review of the most common types of dry closets will help you make a choice. If electricity is supplied to the installation site of the device, there are several solutions:

  • Dry toilet with freezing. This is a container with a “freezer”: waste is packaged in biodegradable bags and cooled to low temperatures, which ensures that there is no unpleasant odor. Such devices are emptied quite often due to the small collection capacity, for example, into a compost pit. Suitable for installation on board an airliner, for mobile offices, and for caring for patients with disabilities.
  • Dry toilet with combustion function. Recycled waste, directly in the storage container, is heated to high temperatures and turns into ash. And it can already be disposed of as regular household waste. The devices are suitable for all possible installation cases, the only limitation is the high price.

Models without the use of electricity are also divided by type of disposal:

  • A peat dry flush toilet is a model with waste backfilled with a peat mixture that absorbs moisture and neutralizes odors. The contents of the device’s storage tank, ready for “ripening,” are emptied into the compost pit. An excellent option for a summer house or homestead: the contents of the device’s storage tank, ready for “ripening,” are buried in the ground or emptied into a compost pit and theoretically can be used in a few years as fertilizer.
  • Liquid dry closets consist of two containers - the upper one filled with water for flushing, and the lower one - a receiving one. A pump is installed in the upper section - bellows, piston or electric. A little water and a splitting liquid are poured into the lower tank, the upper tank is filled with water and a special shampoo is added. The contents of the tank are drained as they are filled, once every few days, and the contents are poured into a waste pit or sewer. Dry toilets with a filling indicator are convenient. Liquid composting toilets can use both chemical and organic shampoos and disintegrating liquids.

But even in these devices, for example, a flush pump, a stirrer, and compost heating can operate from an electrical network or batteries (accumulators).

Type. It is necessary to determine what type of structure is needed: portable or stationary. The first option is represented by compact models that are easy to transport. They are easy to install and use. Stationary can be, including cabin type. A special feature of this dry closet is the presence of a replaceable waste container, which is replaced as necessary. Some mobile models, due to the specifics of their operation, can be used as stationary ones.

Device. For home use, you should choose an easy-to-use design, the operation of which should be convenient for each family member and not cause difficulties.

Dimensions of the structure. An individual criterion, determined depending on how many people the device is intended to be used for and its possible features. In particular, for elderly or disabled people it is advisable to use a design with a special stand with handrails.

Seat height. Usually the height has a standard value (40 - 45 cm). But if children will use the device, this must be taken into account when choosing.

Volume of the waste collection tank. An important criterion that should be calculated depending on the number of users of the device. The volume of this part varies and depends, among other things, on the type of dry closet. So, the volume of a liquid product will be approximately 10 - 25 liters, and a peat product from 40 to 200 liters. For example, when using a liquid model with a lower tank volume of 10 liters, the number of flushes will be approximately 20. At the same time, when determining the volume of the container, it should be understood that the larger it is, the greater the weight of the container with waste that must be disposed of regularly. With the parameters in the example indicated above, the weight of the filled tank of the liquid product will be about 12 kg.

Quality. One of the main criteria, because The service life of the product depends on the quality of the materials used and assembly.

Additional functionality. This could be, for example, the presence of a waste container full indicator or a heated seat function.

Review

“I’ve had
Separett Villa for 3 years now, in the summer it’s generally great, no smell, no problems - 1 but you have to make sure that the liquid
fraction drainage pipe doesn’t get clogged, otherwise there will be a serious accident - the place where the bucket is installed will flood and that’s it, scooping it out is an awesome pleasure — I checked it the hard way (the pit on the street clogged due to a design error), after that there were no accidents! It works great in winter, nothing freezes in the pit , everything is great! There is no noise or smell at all (the smell appears in the summer near the house during the wind due to the side outlet of the ventilation pipe under the roof - this year I will raise the pipe higher! I use garbage bags and then throw the contents into the trash can (everything is relatively dry there and does not smell almost nothing), the garbage really stinks stronger =) When the power is turned off. I don’t bother with energy - I open the toilet and put the lid on the tank from the kit and that’s it =) There will be a battery this year. In short, as happy as an elephant. "

Review:

Impressions from the first day of using the latest model of the Compact-Premium peat dry closet : + sit comfortably - you need to ask the manufacturer to fill the flush/fill tank with peat, because you are unlikely to succeed (especially considering that the peat sold is damp and likes to stick together) ... so a bucket of peat + a scoop - RULES + odors (after filling up big things) - no, after small things you don’t have to pour it in - declared peat consumption (1 bag 7 kg for 2 people per season) - lie... I don’t know how to put it mildly: first there is a mound at the bottom, a mound in the tank, and then sprinkle your work, in general, from 3 purchased 7-kg bags for 20 hours of stay 1.5 bags left - a spinner for filling - nonsense, because... in the tank on the far wall the peat sticks together and hello... you have to knock on the tank My rating is 4

The best dry toilets for a summer residence in terms of price/quality ratio

Kekkila Ekomatic 50

This model does not have a container for peat; you need to fill it in manually after each visit. The housing itself provides for the separation of waste into liquid and solid fractions. The liquid goes out through the drainage hose into a collection container (canister). Solid waste remains in the perforated lower collection container, and, sprinkled with peat, is converted into compost. The lower tank has rollers on which it is turned by a hand wheel, this makes its filling more uniform and helps liquids flow into the drain. If emptying is necessary, the top cover with the seat is removed, the inner container is removed and transferred to the unloading site, for example, to a compost pit. It is necessary to connect not only a drainage hose to the device, but also a ventilation pipe. Dimensions: 50x51x47 (H) cm. Country of origin: Finland, warranty: 2 years.

Advantages

  • Completely autonomous device: does not require water or electricity connection
  • Liquid and solid waste separation system: minimal odor and slow container filling
  • Optimal tank size: not heavy to carry
  • Low net weight – 7 kg

Flaws

  • Peat must be filled in manually and preferably after each trip to the toilet.
  • The package includes only the drain hose, vent elbow and top fungus. A ventilation pipe with a diameter of 75 mm must be purchased additionally

Review

“I bought the same one over the weekend ( Piteco 506). I received a modification with a different handle for the peat spreader - as in Fig. in the passport (see photo). I don’t know if this is worse or better - I suspect that ’ll still have to throw the peat with a scoop . The plastic of the body and container seems a little flimsy. Ventilation pipes are included, you will have to come up with a replacement. So far the only thing that comes to mind is to buy a 75mm sewer pipe. Maybe there are some other options? Although the first elbow will have to be left if the internal container cannot be pulled out without moving it, as SergeyAS writes.”

Piteco 905V

A stationary peat dry closet designed for infrequent maintenance/emptying: the volume of its storage tank is 120 liters. The base of the device is attached to the floor, a drainage hose is connected to it, and an exhaust pipe is mounted relative to it. For maintenance, you do not need to disconnect all connections; just turn the exhaust pipe coupling and roll the device by the handle (actually there are 4 handles, on different sides). After servicing, the toilet returns to the base and is fixed on it. The seat is located at the optimal height - 48 cm. Waste products are covered with peat after turning the spreader handle. The waste container has a slope and liquid waste flows into a drainage hole located in the bottom. The model is equipped with a fan for forced air removal when installing a ventilation pipe with a curved elbow, in cases where a straight pipe cannot be installed. Dimensions: 59.5x80 cm. The manufacturer’s line includes similar models without a fan, as well as with a thermal seat (made of polypropylene, does not heat up in the cold). Product made in Russia, warranty – 2 years.

  • Mobility: there is a wheel unit, you can carry it by the handle to the place of emptying
  • A special valve closes the drainage hole when rolling away from the base

  • Stencil for marking mounting holes - included
  • Material: durable plastic

Flaws

  • The need to lead the ventilation pipe outside the room, and the drainage pipe into a container or pit
  • At sub-zero temperatures, liquid waste may freeze, blocking the valve at the drainage inlet
  • A toilet with a fully filled tank is very heavy to transport, even on wheels, especially if there are thresholds, steps, etc.

Review

I also use Piteko 505. I’ve adapted to spreading peat: I turn it smoothly in one direction or the other, and it falls asleep decently. The nuts have not yet been loosened, apparently the assembler was caught by a normal person and did not tighten the nuts. The container is also not very easy to remove, despite the cut in the lower pipe, but I have adapted: I don’t load more than half of the container, so it’s easier to get it out. Well, on the other hand, the managers offered me to buy the completely problem-free Biolet Multoa, but its price is such that I decided that for my change house Piteko 505 is an ideal option , even if sometimes I throw in peat with a scoop, the main thing is that there are no flies and no smell!

How to use

  • Operating a dry closet does not require any special skills or knowledge. The main thing is to assemble the structure correctly so that the tanks are tightly connected to each other, and in models where flushing is intended, install a pump for supplying water, as well as a valve that prevents the formation of air pockets.
  • Before starting use, or after each emptying of the storage tank, it is necessary to pour the required amount of chemical into it or pour peat into a special compartment, depending on the type of dry closet. It is important to monitor the occupancy indicator and dispose of waste in a timely manner.
  • The possibility of using these portable closets in winter depends on their type and installation location. In well-heated rooms there is no need to preserve them.

Design features

The dry closet consists of two plastic tanks, which are combined into one common structure.

  • Water is poured into the top, which is used for flushing.
  • The lower one acts as a waste collector. This container is equipped with a sealing valve, which prevents the release of liquid and odor to the outside.

In addition to these basic elements, the composting toilet also includes others:

  • pump for flushing water;
  • toilet;
  • seat;
  • lid;
  • waste level indicator.

A dry closet should be considered as a good purchase for those families who have

disabled or elderly people. If they do not have the opportunity to use a sanitary room , then purchasing a dry closet would be the best solution.

The market currently offers a wide variety of models of such devices. One of the models available to consumers is HO11A . Its main advantage is that it can be built into a wheelchair, which provides convenience for people who are unable to move independently. This dry toilet, intended for patients, has a hygienic opening and a padded soft seat. This allows you to use it as a regular stroller chair. In addition, it comes with a removable bucket equipped with a lid.

conclusions

Dry toilets are an affordable alternative to centralized sewerage, which can be used in the country, in outbuildings and temporary housing. The design is indispensable for caring for seriously ill people, while traveling and for organizing mobile sanitary facilities.

When choosing a reliable device, first of all, pay attention to the capacity of the main and storage tanks. The higher the capacity of the tanks, the more people can use the toilet for a long time without having to clean it.

It is also important to consider the method of waste processing: peat composting toilets, unlike storage toilets, do not need regular cleaning, but do not function well without drainage.

Auxiliary functions in the design of dry toilets: a flushing mechanism, ventilation and the presence of a fullness indicator greatly simplify the use of sanitary devices.
