Stove in a frame house: feasibility of installation and choice of heating model

When choosing a method of heating a new home, you want to purchase not just a heating device, but to create a non-trivial, cozy atmosphere.

A stove or fireplace in a frame house can be a practical and at the same time decorative solution.

They can be made of almost any design, and the use of modern technologies will eliminate the fire hazard of an open source of fire.

Country frame house with stove

Stove heating in a frame house: pros and cons

The stove and fireplace are time-tested heating methods. They, unlike a gas or electric boiler, are able to give an atmosphere of warmth and a lived-in look to the most unassuming home.

The crackling fire in the stove accompanied by the roar of the wind in the chimney is almost synonymous with home comfort.

Installing a stove and fireplace in a stone, aerated concrete or brick house does not raise any questions, but owners of frame houses often have doubts.

Is it worth installing them in a frame house or is it dangerous and ineffective? Like any heating system, a stove has its pros and cons.

Advantages:

  • ease of manufacture and operation. You can buy a ready-made stove or fireplace for a frame cottage, or you can lay it out yourself, using diagrams and descriptions from the Internet;
  • independence from centralized energy systems. You can install a fireplace stove in a frame house in any area, even the most remote from civilization;
  • availability of fuel. Firewood for the stove is inexpensive, and you can burn wood chips, tree trimmings, and other waste;
  • unlike gas heating, stove heating does not require collecting a large amount of documentation, preparing a complex project and associated costs;
  • the pleasure of watching an open fire, the feeling of living warmth.

Flaws:

  • uneven heating. Even within a room, not to mention the entire frame house, there are better and worse heated areas. In the case of a stove, this is solved by installing heating batteries;
  • fire hazard in case of careless operation, although frame structures are made from non-combustible materials;
  • volume. These heating devices require more space than, for example, gas boilers. Their installation is difficult in a miniature frame house.

Warm floor

The underfloor heating system is installed on subfloors. It is first necessary to install a vapor barrier on the surface to protect the floor from moisture. Next, heat-reflecting material is laid to prevent heat dissipation, after which heating mats are laid. Finally, finishing and installation of heated floor control systems are carried out.

The advantage of the solution is that warm air rises up from the surface of the floors and is distributed throughout the entire space of the room, and cold air falls to the bottom, where it also warms up.

Types of stoves for frame houses

A frame house can be equipped with a traditional Russian stove, a Dutch oven, or a modern metal heating and cooking device. Each option is attractive in its own way.

Russian stove in a frame house

A brick oven will require significant space, a separate foundation, and special design.

It is important to maintain a distance between the wall and heated surfaces.

But a room with a beautifully decorated stove is worth it. It can be decorated with tiles, creating an interior in a pseudo-Russian style.

Painting a stove in a modern interior

A metal stove can be installed in any place where it is possible to remove the chimney pipe.

Models are available in a variety of sizes and functions, so it is easy to adapt such a plate to any frame structure.

It is smaller, less expensive and requires a fire-resistant floor covering.

Using a solid fuel boiler

Heating for a frame house using a solid fuel boiler is the best option for houses without gas supply. It allows you to use a wide variety of raw materials for heating - firewood, peat briquettes, wood and paper production waste. In a solid fuel boiler, not only the raw materials themselves are burned, but also the gas released during the process, which can significantly increase the efficiency of the equipment.

The principle of operation of a solid fuel boiler is as follows: through the heat exchanger pipes in the boiler, the air mass is heated, which subsequently enters the premises of the building. The convection process makes it possible to increase the temperature in the house to the required values within a short time.

Equipment operating on solid fuel supports several operating algorithms:

  • Stage-by-stage heating of the house;
  • Fast heating;
  • Maintains the set temperature for 12-15 hours.

Types of fireplaces for a frame house

A fireplace in a frame home seduces with an open, safe flame.

It is not always assigned the role of the main heating device; sometimes it is just decoration.

A frame house can be equipped with the following device options:

  • classic stone fireplace with functional heating;
  • electric - often with a decorative portal, but can perform heating functions;
  • gas;
  • decorative - built for beauty.

Imitation of fire in an electric fireplace

Decorative finishing

Finishing work is the most enjoyable stage. There is room for your designer's imagination to run wild here. But do not forget that the facing coating should not only be beautiful, but also easy to maintain. In addition, the coating must be resistant to high temperatures. Of the materials that satisfy these requests, you can choose: heat-resistant plaster compositions, special ceramic tiles or natural stone.

How to imitate fire

Not everywhere it is possible to install a natural fireplace. For example, in an attic room. The solution is to make a fireplace frame from available materials and imitate a live fire. The decorative hearth can be made using one of the popular options:

  • imitation using steam;
  • "theater" fire device;
  • candles;
  • imitation using salt lamps.

How to clad the roof

The choice of cladding should be made based on the material of the portal. For powerful brick structures, as well as structures made of plywood or chipboard, you can choose something heavier.

For weaker structures, the same materials are used as for simulating a fireplace.

What to put in the firebox and how to decorate the back wall

Decorative elements for the back wall can be very diverse - from candles to pillows. Anything that the owners of the house associate with peace, comfort and aesthetic pleasure will do.

There are enough options for installing fireplaces and stoves to choose the optimal one, based on the features of the construction and the desired result of use.

Classic fireplace design

This is the oldest heating device used by man. Allows you to quickly heat the room, but does not accumulate heat - it warms while the fire burns.

Due to its massiveness, a separate foundation must be poured. If the frame cottage is built on screw piles, the foundations of the walls and fireplace can be connected.

Main parts: firebox and chimney. Their components:

  • heating device;
  • mouth;
  • grate;
  • forced convection system;
  • safety doors;
  • ash dump

The classic fireplace remains relevant

For safety, you should lay out the floor around the fireplace with non-flammable, easily washable material.

Outside, the firebox is framed by a portal. To reduce heat loss, hollow bricks are used, the walls are laid out at an angle.

A pass is installed between the firebox and the smoke chamber to prevent sparks and soot from entering the room.

The chimney is protected by a cap to protect it from the elements.

Solar panels

Elements that generate electricity from a natural and free source - the Sun. The design is an installation of several units located on the roof, battery storage elements and a converter.

A system assembled in series allows you to directly receive free current sufficient to heat rooms, but the use of household appliances is excluded, since the efficiency of solar panels is only 25%. It is good to use them in conjunction with another source if the owner urgently needs to have a well-organized life. The operation of the system is available only if the following conditions are met:

  1. The area should have sunny days - at least 20 per month. Otherwise, there is no point in installing the system. She simply will have nothing to eat, and she will not be able to accumulate energy. Such systems are mostly common in the southern regions.
  2. The roof area must be at least 40 m². In addition, there should be no tall trees nearby that could create shadows.
  3. The rafter system must withstand the considerable weight of the set of elements.

Installation is expensive, but by paying just once, owners can feel the advantage that electric heating of a house made from sip panels has thanks to this installation over other sources, already in the first year of operation. The costs are fully recouped in 5-6 years. The durability of the system allows you not to think about replacement for several decades. Only a master can install the unit.

Beginning of work

Before starting installation, it was necessary to decide on the chimney. The following varieties exist:

  • brick;
  • ceramic;
  • sandwich

On the advice of the master, we took a sandwich type chimney, manufactured by the Research Institute of KM. Russian manufacturer, reliable, steel 1 mm thick. Having purchased the necessary elements in two steps, we took everything to the house.

The first unpleasant moment was that the diameter of the outlet from the firebox to the chimney was too small. This problem was solved with the help of an adapter. Still, it is better when the chimney has a larger diameter.

The second nuance was the lack of a stand for installing the firebox flush with the portal opening. Most likely they simply forgot to put it down during loading from the exhibition, but since a lot of time had passed, it was too late to look for it. Our master was not at a loss, and in a couple of hours he built a stand from metal profiles by welding and painted it with a special black paint.

Before the construction of the box began, a “fitting” was carried out, when, using a simple addition of elements, they looked at the finished portal with a firebox and chose the shape of the structure around the pipes.

Selection of firebox and portal

It seems that knowing the technical characteristics, it is not difficult to make a choice via the Internet. A large number of manufacturers and intermediaries offer a huge selection for every taste. But, once you start studying the assortment, you realize that the color and size may differ significantly from the picture on the website. Therefore, it was decided to visit the exhibition “Stoves, fireplaces, barbecues” at Crocus Expo.

The assortment at such exhibitions is large and, as a rule, manufacturers, wanting to advertise themselves, show the best of their products for different price categories. After the agony of choice, preference was given to the assembled kit from one of the intermediary companies.

Firebox from the Hungarian manufacturer Technical, model PanTherm Optimum. The determining factors were:

  • price in the middle range;
  • Topi power 10 kW;
  • cast iron, which should not be deformed;
  • attractive appearance.

Having paid the full price, we ordered delivery to the site and began preparing for the start of work.

Ardenfire (META, Russia)

GC Meta specializes in the manufacture of stoves, fireboxes, linings and accessories for stove equipment. This is a Russian manufacturer, 20 years on the market. The range of fireplace stoves we are interested in includes products made of steel and cast iron. The latter are produced in a separate Ardenfire line, in particular, models Marseille 7, 10 and 14. Despite the fact that the company is Russian, all components are supplied from abroad - only assembly and testing are carried out in the Russian Federation. Thus, cast iron parts come from France, sealing cords from Germany, glass for installation in doors from Japan. Among the features of the Marcel model: a large glass in the door with a “clean glass” system, firewood and brown coal can be used as fuel, and there is a secondary afterburning. Impressions from use. Powerful cast iron stoves that easily fit into the interior of a country house. Large firebox, suitable for standard size firewood. Heat from the body is transferred by radiation, so the room is not heated as quickly as in designs with convection elements. Long-term burning is not provided, but due to the massiveness of the stove, it cools down within 2-3 hours with an average burning time of 2 hours per stack. The design is simple, but the large glass area of the door gives it a special charm due to the mesmerizing view of burning logs.

Exploitation

During the first start, a chemical smell is felt. This is the burning of oils and lubricants. Then, everything went away. Heating was carried out regularly throughout the summer season. They burned with briquettes and wood. During all this time, it was overheated only once, after which the steel changed its color to bluish. After reading on the Internet, we concluded that this is a common option.

The structure has been standing quietly and working properly for a long time. Glass can be easily cleaned with wet newspaper soaked in ash, without any chemicals. The contractor was left with positive feedback and given the best recommendations. The cost of the entire installation with work and materials was as of September 2021. 74,000 rubles.

Since we are building a house for ourselves, trying not to attract borrowed funds, the process is not moving very quickly. Over the past period, other large-scale work has been completed, so the external finishing of the box is still in the plans.

Despite the fact that installing a fireplace is a difficult, slow and expensive process, the installation was worth all the costs. It's nice to sit near the fireplace, warm your feet and enjoy the cozy warmth, listening to the crackling of the firewood.

We thank Irina from the Moscow region for the material provided, who together with her family is building a warm and cozy frame house. You can read the story with a photo report about the cladding of this house here.
